The neutral status system requires athletes to refrain from displaying any Russian symbols during competitions and have no record of publicly supporting Russia's actions in the Ukraine war. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the FIG initially banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing, which significantly affected Russia's participation in this traditionally dominant sport. In 2023, the FIG announced that, starting from January 1, 2024, athletes from the two countries (Russia and Belarus) would be allowed to return to international competitions as "individual neutral athletes." However, the Russian Gymnastics Federation initially refused to comply with the relevant conditions. By February 2024, the situation shifted. Vasily Titov, the first vice president of the federation, told MatchTV that applications for neutral status had been submitted for about 100 Russian gymnasts.
This decision by the Russian gymnasts could further impact the landscape of international gymnastics competitions and also reflects the ongoing complex situation regarding the participation of Russian athletes in international sports events.
